Valentine's Day Travel Tips

Check into that motel you pass everyday on your way home. (And bring your own pillow.) Sure these one story bed rests get a bad rap, but for a seasoned relationship, there's something incredibly different and interesting about 'meeting' at one. Surprise your loved one by just telling them the address, then make sure you're in the room long before they are, light a candle, spread the flowers and pour a glass of champagne. Although you may only be a few yards from home, you'll both wake up in a totally different mindset.

Don't be limited by the calendar. Although Valentine's Day falls on a Monday this year, and rarely do co-workers or your boss recognize the rose fest as a national holiday, do your due diligence and take off the weekend before.

Embrace the short haul. Instead of dreaming of that far away Bora Bora water bungalow, research closer, more attainable locales. Areas that are between 3-6 hour drives. This length of trip provides just enough feeling of getting away, without draining your wallet. Be sure to make a mixed tape or eight track for the drive- something special that will surprise your loved one with each opening music cue. Lastly, don't forget to turn the radio off as well- good conversation has always been stoked by the purring engine of the open highway.

Do something completely different. If the two of you have never cruised, cruise. Miniature golfed, pick up the short stick. Doing something out of both of your comfort zones immediately creates a sense of togetherness, warmth and exciting new memories. Many couple make the mistake of trying something new on their anniversary- the downfall is if the experience isn't well received, the important date is ruined that year. The best thing about Valentine's Day- although it's a looked-forward to holiday- if your miniature golfing is ruined by a bunch of drunk teenagers vomiting in the holes before you, it won't be the end of the world.

Finally, go the extra distance. Research that high-end luxury hotel and pull the trigger. You'd be surprised to learn they're not as expensive as you may believe. And many give Valentine's Day specials, two for one deals, spa treatments, and romantic dinners for two. Nothing say true love more than opening your heart and your wallet, and as we all know, more times than not, our Valentine's Day plans end up this way. But don't be disheartened, next year, find that local motel.
